“Once upon a world, where time is place, a journey beyond imagination, is about to unfold…” It begins in the most boring place in the world: Chickentown, USA.  There lives Candy Quakenbush, her heart bursting for some clue as to what her future might hold.  When the answer comes, it’s not the one she expects.  Out of nowhere comes a wave, and Candy, led by a man called John Mischief (whose brothers live on the horns on his head), leaps into the surging waters and is carried away.  Where?  To the Abarat: a vast archipelago where every island is a different hour of the day, from the Great Head that sits in the mysterious twilight waters of Eight in the Evening, to the sunlit wonders of Three in the Afternoon, where dragons roam, to the terrors of Gorgossium, the island of Midnight, ruled over by the Prince of Midnight himself, Christopher Carrion.  As Candy’s journeys from one amazing place to another, making fast friends and encountering treacherous foes – mechanical bugs and giant mothers, miraculous cats and men made of mud, a murderous wizard and his terrified slave – she begins to realize something.  She has been here before.  Candy has a place in this extraordinary world: she is here to help save the Abarat from the dark forces that are stirring at its heart.  Forces older than Time itself, and more evil than anything Candy has ever encountered.  She’s a strange heroine, she knows.  But this is a strange world.  And in the Abarat, all things are possible.

Jolly, Griffin and their pirate friends are back, battling to save the world from the evil Maelstrom.  Griffin leaves his magic room in the belly of a giant whale to take on the lord of the kobalins.  Princess Soledad fights to protect the sea star city and encounters an awe-inspiring serpent god.  Together, Jolly and Munk make their way underwater to reach the center of the Maelstrom.  There they meet the beautiful Aina, who is a polliwog like themselves but from an ancient time.  Is she a girl or a ghost?  A friend or an enemy?  While the battle for the sea star city is raging, Jolly learns the shocking truth about Aina.  As Jolly begins to understand the past, she realizes what she must do to save the whole Caribbean.  But is she already too late?

In the vast Caribbean Sea, pirates Jolly and Griffin are stranded ona  tiny island where a peculiar architect is building an enormous bridge – but to where?  Another world?  Before they can find out, the bridge bursts into flames and the kobalins attack.  Jolly and Griffin have nowhere to run until the Ghost Trader mysteriously appears and carries them off to the magical coral city of Aelinium.  It is from Aelinium that Jolly and Munk are supposed to descend far, far into the deep to keep out the world-devouring Maelstrom.  But Jolly isn’t ready for that task.  She wants to rescue Captain Bannon, the only father she ever knew, so she steals the ghost ship and sets sail.  Griffin follows her, until he is trapped by the man in the whale.  Princess Soledad has her own plans – to kill Pirate Emperor Kendrick.  But the truly terrifying cannibal king stands in her way.  Is Soledad ready to become the new pirate emperor?
